Rewriting the applications to run on a GPU is difficult enough that rather few BOINC projects have done it yet. For example, it probably requires learning at least one new computer language. BOINC projects that want volunteers to help with this might post some details of what computer languages are involved (both for the old applications to be rewritten, and for the new GPU application), and what human language to expect the comments to be in.

If they choose OpenCL as the new computer language, they should find it easier to make the new application work on both Nvidia-based GPU cards and AMD/ATI-based GPU cards. However, it's unclear if BOINC is even ready to handle applications written in OpenCL.

Another detail - if the algorithm for the current application is sufficiently serial in nature, they'll also have to find a much more parallel-capable algorithm that can do the same work, and probably write the new application entirely from that algorithm, instead of translating it from the old application.
