The good news: My account still exists.

The bad news: My credits dropped from 135,724.90 to 7,823.

Yup, it's an old database backup that Jack put back. One from before the war.
But Willy was so friendly to send the last stats.xml file to Jack, from which he should be able to reconstruct some accounts.

Whether or not the credit will also be resurrected, I don't know. I think the first thing to be done is to get people's accounts back.

Reconstruct some accounts?

Willys stats.xml has all accounts and credits, Why dont you use it to repair your broken DB?

BTW: I lost "only" 7,5k credits...

Reconstruct some accounts?

Willys stats.xml has all accounts and credits, Why dont you use it to repair your broken DB?

Because the stats.xml file does not contain all information about everyone. The stats.xml file only contains things as your user ID, user name, credits etc. but NOT the account key or email address.

All we're left with in the database at this moment is people's account keys.
With no data available to us who these account keys are for, Jack has to match all that by hand. A time consuming operation, that he has to juggle at the same time as he's doing his normal day job and has his normal life.

At such a moment it's more urgent to get the accounts matched to people. Credit is for later, it's not that urgent.

So what about backups then? We're running with the last sane backup. Some of the incremental backups done in between were corrupted. This one is the last complete backup that the project did. To do such backups, we have to take everything down, including forums, work, scheduler etc. for 4-12 hours. Perhaps that this is a lesson for the project and that we'll now do those backups once a week, a la Seti.

Before the next person thinks this is a good idea, may we stress that you do NOT post your and other people's account keys in the forums!

With these keys anyone can access your account and change things or take it over.
That's why we asked you to email Jack with that information.

alright; i'm back after having jack retrieve and redo my account...

thanks Jack...

also, make sure that if you are trying to get into your account with your au code; be sure that it is 25 characters long, not 32 characters as the boinc file has 32. i didn't realize that i was doing this until jack pointed out...

Hi folks !
I just wonder what do we have to do if we still have some WU in cache (In my case I have a lot of WU to validate and upload)
Should I cancel them ? (Too bad to loose the result...) I don't really care about points if this can help...

THank you !

keep the work until jack post something about that situation...

if it's waiting to upload, it can stay there another week before it abort on the transfer and there is a way to increase the upload 14 day time out limit...

I checked, and those were public CPIDs, not account keys. So it was nothing we couldn't already get from the exported stats.

I checked them as well, at the time three of them were the person's account keys.

Workunits are hopeless to recover. At this point we're only caring about users. Workunits can always be recreated and recrunched later, but we have to recover data from user accounts (like credits)!

Nicol, the wu's are important, and credit can be restored at a later time; however, time loss to recunching may or may not be recovered, so, the wu's that are out in the field are important and once we've made a 90-100 % recovery of the accounts, the server will be turned on to receive the work in field from computers with work on them.

i've got 3 computers with work ready to report and i have have 1 turned off, so it doesn't loose it by accident.. the others I'm backing the data up.

...Are CPIDs really that unstable?

PEBKAC.
Say I merge 2 computers; A and B. Computer B has the most recent contact with the server so the merged entity is called B. But B is actually no longer in use and the next time computer A contacts the server a new CPID is created.

I've made the mistake described above, but what if computer B is still active? Would the CPID constantly change at each server contact for both computers?

if you create an account in new project with new computer, account gets new CPID.

now if you attach old project to this new computer, account in old project will get newer CPID

Why does this create a new user CPID?

You're right of course! I went on about host CPID. Nevermind :)

Its not so hard to restore the basic information, credits and username. Three things I need from people:
1) Username
2) Email Address
3) Account Key (but if you don't know it i can make one up for you, just reset your password once you login)

I got credit for free, THX a lot.

I had 6,95 credits (that's six dot nine five), but with the DB-retrieval I suddenly had 7.00 (that's seven dot Oh Oh), so O got 0.05 credits for free.

It's fine with me :D
