I was running four WUs on a G5 quad with Tiger for a couple of hours, and the CPU time never started counting upward, even though the tasks were flagged as running and were using plenty of CPU in Activity Monitor. I aborted them and the remainder of the batch I received. Any idea what's going on?

As a follow-up to this, when I aborted the first few WUs, I noticed the WUs farther down in the list, which under normal circumstances would have begun running at that point, said "Waiting for shared memory" and failed to start. Hopefully that will help isolate whatever the problem may be.

P.S. I have 8GB of RAM on this machine, so I don't think the problem is due to insufficient RAM.

Well, Macs aren't my strong suit, but one thing I know about them is that shared memory is a global parameter set at boot time and it is not dynamically adjustable.

So one possibility is since the app appears to be malfunctioning, just aborting it doesn't release the shared memory it was using (in essence a memory leak). So in that case the only way to get around it after the abort would be to reboot.

I actually tried rebooting before downloading and starting a second batch of WUs, just to make sure - but no dice. Re: the shared memory issue, I realize you were talking about aborting tasks and switching over to others, though. But for the admins' info, rebooting didn't fix anything.

For my leopard machine, it starts fine, but then goes into the endless loop of "can't find finish file, reset project if this continues to happen." I had to abort and set to NNW.
