I noticed one of my machines with four long running work units. The machine is not running out of memory or anything else like that. A look in the slot directory has a stderr.txt containing

step 1726400, will finish Fri Apr 16 08:45:08 2010, step 1726300, total steps: 12724999, fraction complete 0.135662
step 1726600, will finish Fri Apr 16 08:44:52 2010, step 1726500, total steps: 12724999, fraction complete 0.135678
step 1726800, will finish Fri Apr 16 08:44:42 2010, step 1726800, total steps: 12724999, fraction complete 0.135694

The work unit in question has a report deadline of April 11 so if the estimate is correct, it won't finish in time.

Are these likely to produce any useful results or are they broken?

I had one that was at 136 hours, and only 6% done. I just aborted it.

As for the "No WU should take over 4 hours", I have a bunch of them that are just over 4 hours, and in the 90% complete range. I assume they will complete okay with just a few more minutes of crunching. These are on fairly fast Core2/windows machines. So I think your max estimate may be a bit off.

A question/suggestion: If these really shouldn't be running very long, would it be possible to put an auto-kill function in the app, that would abort the task after (say) 10 hours?

As far as I can see, the 7zip archiving wrapper is failing on your system. An old culprit that's come back, perhaps? Something that Jack will have to look into.
