Something for those in the US to consider before making a donation:

The last I remember, the project had not reached a decision on whether to become nonprofit. Also, I see nothing on whether those who make donations will receive anything extra if the project ever goes for-profit and then actually makes a profit.

Therefore, I believe that the US income tax laws require treating any such donations as investments for income tax purposes, and not as tax deductible donations. Anyone want to ask an income tax professional for his or her opinion?

Also, does anyone from another country want to offer an opinion on whether this also applies in his or her country?

Probably we will form an LLC this year. And setup an online store. So no, I don't think you want to donate until we have something to sell. Its always nice to have some "angel" investors. Tax deductable contributions in the US only apply to non-profit companies with an IRS ruling. We are not going that direction. It looks like we have more grant options as a for profit.

As I long as profits will only be reinjected in the project, I'm fine with donation.

If the money can support us so we have salaries to do this work, then it will go into the project.

Has your decision to go LLC affected your ability to get enough active participants?

Most of my recent workunits are still waiting to be issued to enough participants to get a quorum.

Does this project require the issue of all 3 of the required tasks for quorum to different users? That could slow things down, since laurenu2 is doing more than half of all the work of the project.

Well, that's good for getting a fast quorum.

Why do we need all those other people anyway?

Good. I was about to make a point of order that a quorum was not present. A roll call would have taken forever...
The lovely lady you see isn't I, but Hayley Westenra, a classical crossover singer from Christchurch, NZ. There is no known voice as hers. Check her out- she's seraphic.

We currently have no 501(3) status, but we are gathering money to get it. All volunteer donations as any finance related to the project will be disclosed.
Until now we've got 45$ of donations from last summer. We have currently no idea how to use them, so we just store these money for 501(3) registration. This 501(3) will be a special foundation for development of open source software for medicine and biotechnologies.
We are very welcome you with donations. The more you donate the sooner we can apply for 501(3) non profit. So all donations will go through non-commercial organization as soon as we'll get enough donations to register it (at least about 500$, we are pretty far from it now :)).

However for collaboration on drug discovery with pharma companies we expect commercial company to be much more effective. We have registered now Ltd and are going to register LLC in USA for in silico drug design which won't be based only on Drugdiscovery@home facilities, but all the profits related to DD@ will be disclosed as much as possible and part of them will be donated to 501(3) organization. Our main goal is to be as effective as possible in discovery and development of low cost drugs.
